Our History
15-Dec-1990
JM Interior Works (1990)
JM Interior Works (1990) was first established in Dec 1990 by Mr Jamaludin Bin Masood as a small sole proprietorship. At that time, the business was humble and simple.
Mainly taking on ad-hoc renovation works and subcontract jobs. Back then, there were no computers, accounting software, or digital invoicing. Everything was done manually, through word of mouth, handwritten quotations and personal relationships.

Mr Jamaludin started the business with the hope of improving his family’s life while still holding a full time job at an MNC. Like many small businesses in the early days, progress was slow. Balancing a full-time job, raising three children, and trying to grow a small side business meant that there was little time to fully focus on the company. Over the years, as the children grew, they would occasionally help out part-time and getting hands-on assisting with small renovation works.

After being there for 35 years, Mr Jamaludin was retrenched and given a month notice to leave his work. After his retrenchment this period, the family began taking on small scale renovation projects together, slowly keeping the business alive while navigating a challenging time for the family.
05-Jan-2018
JM & SONS General Contractor Pte. Ltd.
Fast forward to 2018, Mr Jamaludin’s sons made the decision to take over the business and continue the dream their father had started nearly three decades earlier.

JM & Sons General Contractor Pte Ltd was officially incorporated, transforming the small family operation into a structured company registered with the relevant authorities and regulatory bodies. The company initially focused on subcontracting works within the commercial sector, handling projects such as restaurants, offices, F&B outlets and high-end residential projects. At the beginning, the team was small, operating with only a few workers and relying heavily on subcontract opportunities.

During the COVID period, the demand for renovation workers and contractors increased significantly. This period unexpectedly accelerated the company’s growth. JM & SONS expanded rapidly from just 5 workers to more than 40 workers, handling a large number of commercial projects across Singapore.
At that point, approximately 90% of the company’s projects were commercial works and only a small portion are residential projects.

However, as the company grew, the team soon realized that working purely as subcontractors was not as straightforward as many people imagine. Large corporations, architects, designers and main contractors often delayed payments for months. In many cases, payments were disputed even after projects were completed. This meant JM had to fund projects using their own reserves while waiting for payment which could sometimes take many months or even years.
Over time, the company’s accounts receivable grew significantly. Through these experiences, the team learned an important lesson: That as subcontractors, they were often at the mercy of these middle-man. Because of this, JM decided to bite the bullet and change its company direction.

Instead of remaining subcontractors, the company began transitioning towards becoming a main contractor, working directly with property owners and clients. At the same time, the company expanded its internal workforce so that more renovation works could be completed in-house rather than relying heavily on external subcontractors. This shift proved to be a turning point for the company.

During this period, there were also increasing reports in the news about interior design firms failing to deliver projects and leaving homeowners in difficult situations. Many homeowners were looking for honest contractors who could provide direct pricing without unnecessary mark-ups.
Recognizing this gap in the market, JM decided to slowly enter the residential renovation sector. The response was overwhelming.
What initially started as a small step into residential renovation quickly grew into a major part of the company’s operations.
Today

Today, JM & Sons has grown significantly from its humble beginnings as a small family business into a trusted renovation contractor serving homeowners and businesses across Singapore.

Over the years, the company has expanded steadily through word of mouth, repeat clients and referrals. What started as small renovation jobs has gradually developed into a company capable of managing a wide range of residential and commercial renovation projects across Singapore.

JM & Sons currently undertakes various projects including HDB, BTO, condominiums and landed A&A renovation works, as well as commercial interior fitting-out works for retail outlets, offices and F&B establishments.
Today, approximately 70% of our projects are residential renovations while 30% consist of commercial works, allowing us to maintain strong experience across both sectors. One of the key principles we strongly advocate is the direct contractor approach.
In many renovation projects, homeowners often end up paying additional mark-ups through layers of intermediaries such as interior designers, consultants or project managers. While design certainly has its role, we believe that many homeowners benefit from working directly with the contractor who is responsible for building and managing the project.
This approach allows our clients to receive transparent quotations, practical renovation advice and direct contractor pricing without unnecessary middleman costs. Over the years, we have also encountered many homeowners who were left stranded after renovation companies closed down or abandoned projects halfway.
Whenever possible, JM & Sons would stepped in to help such homeowners complete their homes and recover from difficult situations. In selected cases, the company has even extended in-house financial assistance using our own funds to help families who genuinely could not afford to complete their renovation due to unexpected circumstances. While these situations are carefully assessed, we believe that contractors should also carry a sense of responsibility towards the communities they serve.

Beyond business, JM & Sons is also committed to giving back to society. We have supported various community initiatives, charitable causes and Islamic programmes, including contributions towards welfare activities and dakwah efforts aimed at strengthening and uplifting the community.
Despite the company’s growth, JM & Sons remains grounded in the same values it started with, honesty, transparency and responsibility towards every client and every project we undertake.

What began as a father's small side business in 1990 has now grown into a family-run company trusted by many homeowners and businesses across Singapore, and the journey continues as we strive to build better homes, better spaces and a stronger community.
